Three Rights Make a Left

Goodbye to my friend and mentor

By KEN LEONARD.

There is one sight that never fails to bring a tear to my eye. It is in the hallway of George Washington’s Mount Vernon. There hangs a key to the French Bastille, symbolizing the universal principals of liberty that a young officer took back to France to fight for freedom from oppression in the French Revolution. Under the key is an inscription where the great man pays homage to the great General. “Give me leave, my dear General to present you with a picture of the Bastille, just as it looked a few days after I had ordered its demolition, with the main key of the fortress of despotism.
