Why is it called “Stringer” Cemetery?

Heading east on Broad Street, past Prairie View Cemetery, I often looked to my right at some land in front of the railroad tracks and wondered whose it was and why it was not occupied by buildings of some sort. As I remember, Adams Realty had that location listed for a while but did not sell the property to anyone—at least not that I could tell. After several years, I sort of lost interest until one day I saw the land being cleared and then later an archway sign, that read “Stringer Cemetery,” being erected. After more time passed, I saw tombstones for Mr. Roland, the Stringers, Mr. Dewberry, and one of my former students, Anthony Tennon, who, with Dennis Pitmon, had kept me entertained in an early English class I taught at F. H. S. when I began my career in 1973. I tried to find out who or what this “Stringer” was or any other information without success. Recently, some folks asked me about the origin of the cemetery, and I had to plead ignorance and relate my unsuccessful efforts to uncover the “whole story.”
