Monday, Oct. 17, was the deadline to file your 2016 federal income tax return if you filed an extension. The extension granted you more time to file your return, which would have been due last April 15 if you had not received the extension. If your 2016 return shows that you owe more money than you’ve paid for tax year 2016, you’ll have to pay the additional amount plus penalty and interest.
