When a candidate withdraws but the name is still on the ballot
On Monday evening, Apr. 20, Darren Rozell, the only incumbent in a threeway race for Mayor subject to the approaching May 9 municipal election, suddenly withdrew as a candidate. Because Rozell bowed out after the deadline to withdraw candidates’ names from the ballot, his name will still go before the voters, even though he’s no longer seeking office. According to the Texas Election Code, a vote is a vote, whether the candidate is really seeking office or not. (That’s why vote counts in the past have sometimes included oddball write-in names like Santa Claus or the Tooth Fairy.)
