My love affair with reading
A couple of columns ago, I alluded to having learned to read through the phonics method, which basically consists of learning letter sounds and then stringing them together to form words. Phonics was the cradle from which my love of reading grew. I quickly learned to see how written words formed sentences, and it became obvious to my parents early on that I was going to be a good speller and a good reader. Before half my first grade year was over I was reading fluently.
