What does the New Year’s resolution mean to you?

Over the years, the New Year’s resolution has grown so hollow that it has become the butt of numerous jokes. Even as far back as the 1940s, New Year’s resolutions weren’t always taken seriously. In an old Spike Jones parody song, “Happy New Year,” for example, members of Jones’ band all offer corny resolutions designed to make the listener laugh. In terms of 1940s humor, the song is hilarious; in fact, the song contains the first one-liner I ever found funny enough to laugh at. I was probably 6 or 7 at the time I first heard it.
