The possibility that parents could get vouchers from the state to send their child to a charter or private school is closer now than ever. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott is a champion of the school voucher program (being touted under the boilerplate name of “school choice”), and so are some members of the Texas Legislature. School choice has gained support of both legislators and the public over the past several decades and it could very well become the new reality in Texas education.

But I hope Texas lawmakers will think very carefully before opening the gate to the voucher system.
