The history of softball

BY MICHAEL L. MORRILL.

Softball is considered by many to be a young sport in the United States. But it actually has a long and rich tradition not only here but around the world as well. Softball was created by Chicago-based reporter George Hancock in 1887. It was originally designed to be an indoor game. In fact, softball was called “indoor baseball” in its early days. Some other names for softball in the beginning were Diamond Ball and Kitten Ball. The word softball was used for the first time in 1926 by a member of the YMCA.
