The fallacy of autocratic government

Last Friday, Nov. 25, marked a turning point in recent world history. Fidel Castro, who ruled Cuba with a Stalinist-style Communist tyranny for almost 58 years, died at the age of 90.

Judy and I visited Castro’s Cuba twice— once in 1991 and again in 2000. Both visits were with American newspaper groups and thus were deemed OK by the State Department, despite a strict trade and tourism embargo against the Cuban government. On neither of those visits did we see any direct evidence of the oppression the Castro government imposed on the people of Cuba. We were the government’s guests, and Communist governments are past masters at hiding the ugly truths of their system from outsiders.
