Last week’s article ended with house plans drawn on the back of a Forney State Bank counter check and the notation that this was the Penny’s bank of choice, since that institution offered to carry the notes of customers who borrowed money to purchase larger items. So, just what was Mrs. Penny’s official job at the Western Auto Store in downtown Forney, Texas? Well, according to her, she was the bookkeeper, a sales person, and (jokingly) the “brains” of the operations with Malcome providing the “brawn.” Actually, she made sure to emphasize that the store was an equal partnership between husband and wife.
