The turning of the season, part 1: Welcome to our annual Christmas issue!

When most of you read this issue of the Messenger, it will be Dec. 17, and a week from Thursday it will be Christmas Eve. That means that the turning of a season is almost upon us. Fall officially ends, and winter begins, on Dec. 21—between this Thursday and Christmas. Starting Dec. 22, the days, which have been getting shorter since June 21, will imperceptibly begin to get longer again. (You’ll probably first notice daylight lasting a little longer by late January.)
