Happiness is a new tractor
by KEN LEONARD.
This week was one of those weeks when a little kid’s dream literally came true. I grew up in the farming community of Floresville in South Texas. I literally began working on the farm when I was old enough to use a hoe. In Floresville, the crop that was king was peanuts. It was common in the 1960s and earlier for kids as young as ten to hoe the weeds from in between the rows of peanuts. From that I graduated to loading watermelons, hauling hay, working on my aunt’s an uncle’s dairy farm and eventually working beef cattle.
