Ask the Counselor . . .

By SUSAN LAUTZ. LPC.

Dear Susan:
Every year I get depressed over the holidays. I grew up very poor and Christmas was just a time when I was made painfully aware of everything I didn’t have. I was ashamed when my mother took donations of food and clothes from the church. All the kids at school seemed to know I was the “charity case”. My mother tried to make the day special for me, but even those good memories are painful now that she is gone. How do I let friends and co-workers know that I’m just not in the holiday spirit?
Signed: Ms. Grinch
Dear Ms. Grinch:
One of the best ways to get in the Christmas spirit is to experience it through the eyes of a child. You didn’t say whether you have kids of your own, now. If you do, I hope you aren’t ruining their holiday with renditions of just how horrible yours were!
