HOPPIN’ AROUND

A few weeks ago, I heard a sermon about idols. I’ve heard similar messages for as long as I can remember, but this one seemed to really sink in. Most of us think of an idol as some carved statue which primitive people worship. But the fact of the matter is that an idol is anything other than the true God that we accept into our lives that becomes “God” for us. An idol can be shaped like a dollar bill, a famous personality, a job, or even something mental or emotional. that we carry around inside. All three Abrahamic religions teach that idolatry is something to be shunned. For Christians and Jews, the prohibition against idols, or false gods, is contained in the first of the Ten Commandments: “You shall have no other gods before Me.”
